About Us

Designathon Works is a foundation with a mission to empower and unleash children’s creativity to design a better world using new technologies. Our unique Designathon method allows children to invent, build and present their self-devised solutions to a social or environmental issue around the Sustainable Development Goals. It includes access to easy to use scaffolding and teaching materials for ages 4 to 12.

The method leads children to apply their knowledge (in math, biology, physics) as they design innovative solutions around SDGs. Additionally it focuses on inner capacities of all children, regardless their background, race, ability or learning situation, recognizing that each child has something valuable to contribute.
Our mission is achieved by spreading the method and way of thinking to schools, institutes and businesses worldwide.

Our efforts culminate in the annual Global Children's Designathon. During this one-day event, children in the cities worldwide come together to work in parallel and design innovative concepts for one of the SDGs.

Inspired by children and their capacity to imagine better futures, Emer, social designer and educator founded Designathon Works. Previously she co-founded Butterfly Works, co-creation studio for a better world, working in 16 countries and NairoBits, a digital design college for young people from slum areas of Nairobi, now active in 6 countries.

Emer is an Ashoka Fellow and LEGO Re-imagine Learning network.

Emer is also secretary of the foundation.

Ina believes that the creativity and natural empathy of children should be nurtured and valued. Through her work as a designer and driven by her creative nature she creates more opportunities for children to shape their own ideas and become a valuable part of the solution for a better future. Ina is also a passionate photographer.
